Evaluation of a Situational Crime Prevention Approach in Three Jails: The Jail Sexual Assault Prevention Project

ANNOTATION: The application of violence reduction strategies based on situational crime prevention theory (SCP) in three jails is assessed. The impact and associated costs of interventions involving an officer tour system, a recording camera system, and a crisis intervention training program are evaluated. Each of the three case studies presents the following information—site description, data collection, selection and implementation of the intervention, analyses, findings from the preliminary research, selected intervention, implementation, evaluation, and conclusions. Findings discovered across sites and related implications for policy and practice are given for: prevalence and context of violence and self-harm; recommendations for safety interventions; effectiveness of safety interventions; benefits and challenges of action research; and recommendations and implications for policy and practice. “Overall, the findings suggest that situational crime prevention may be a useful framework for identifying and applying strategies in correctional settings and that more research is needed on the effectiveness of the individual intervention approaches under study” (p. i).
