Waterfowl Hunting Information

Public hunting is permitted on portions of the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge. Approximately 10,285 acres of tidal areas and salt ponds are open to waterfowl hunting. The hunting program is administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Hunters must comply with all State and Federal regulations including the refuge specific regulations listed under 50 CFR 32.24, and the regulations described in the Refuge 2012-2013 Waterfowl Hunting Regulations.

Hunting season and bag limits 2012-2013
Waterfowl hunting season opening and closing dates and daily bag limits are determined by the Department of Fish and Game. Check the California Waterfowl Regulations ( http://www.dfg.ca.gov/regulations ) each season for this information.

Hunt Areas
The following maps identify areas of the refuge opening to hunting. Access to Refuge hunt areas will be open two hours prior to start of legal hunt time and one hour after end of legal hunt time each hunt day. Visit the Department of Fish and Game web site for information on the 2011-12 waterfowl and upland game bird hunting regulation booklet for legal shoot times.

2012-2013 Waterfowl Hunting Permitting Process

All hunters must carry:

  • A valid Refuge 2012-2013 Waterfowl Hunting Permit (see Obtaining a Refuge Permit below)
  • A valid California hunting license*
  • A valid, signed Federal Duck Stamp*
  • A valid, signed California Duck Stamp*
  • A free Harvest Information Program (HIP) stamp*
  • Identification that includes a photograph (e.g., driver’s license)

Obtaining a Refuge Permit

  1. You must read and understand the Refuge 2012-2013 Waterfowl Hunting Regulations
  2. Please print the last page (6) of the regulations
  3. Please cut this paper permit out and carry with you while hunting on Refuge property
  4. Print your name and sign where indicated
  5. To get a permit number and the gate combination, call (510) 792-0222 ext. 125 or email eric_mruz@fws.gov

NOTE: If you submitted a hunt application to the refuge last year (2011-2012 season), the refuge will have assigned you a permit number already. Call (510) 792-0222 ext. 125 or email eric_mruz@fws.gov to get your permit number.

If you DID NOT submit an application to the refuge last year, we will not have a permit number on file for you. Call (510) 792-0222 ext. 125 or email eric_mruz@fws.gov and we will assign a permit number for you after completing a hunt application over the phone.
