About the South Central Valley Fire Management Zone
The California South Central Valley Fire Management Zone is headquartered out of the San Luis National Wildlife Refuge Complex in Los Banos, California. The Zone provides fire management services in the San Joaquin Valley for the San Luis, Merced, and San Joaquin River National Wildlife Refuges and the Grasslands Wildlife Management Area. The Zone also provides fire management oversight for the Kern and Pixley National Wildlife Refuges further south in the valley and the Bay Area refuges including the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay, Antioch Dunes, Ellicott Slough, Salinas River, San Pablo Bay, Farallon and Marin Island National Wildlife Refuges.
The Zone has a large prescribed fire program that emphasizes habitat management on a wide variety of refuge habitats including grasslands and vernal pools. On average the Zone treats approximately 2,500 to 5,000 acres a year using prescribed fire and other mechanical and biological treatments types. Contracting and cooperative agreements are used often especially on the Bay Area refuges.
Zone fire staff has a strong working relationship with numerous federal, state and local cooperators in fire suppression and fuels management. Partners include the Cal Fire Merced, Mariposa, Madera Unit, Sierra National Forest, Bureau of Land Management's Hollister Field Office and the San Joaquin Air Quality District.
