About the Nevada Fire Management Zone

The Nevada Fire Management Officer is headquartered at the Las Vegas Fish & Wildlife Office, in Nevada. An Assistance Fire Management Officer is located at Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge, in Fallon, Nevada. The zone provides fire management services for Ash Meadows, Anaho Island, Desert, Fallon, Moapa Valley, Pahranagat, Ruby Lake and Stillwater National Wildlife Refuges. There are also two Fish and Wildlife Field Office and two National Fish Hatcheries within the Zone.

The Zone utilizes interagency fire crews and contractors for suppression and fuels management support. This includes the interagency helitack crew in Las Vegas and fire crews from the Clark County Explorer program. The Zone implements a wide range of fuels management projects through interagency partnerships, agreements and contracting treating between 800 and 1,200 acres a year of vegetation for habitat and hazardous fuels objectives. Projects include the use of prescribed fire and mechanical, chemical and biological treatments that best meet overall resource objectives. Many projects emphasize the removal of nonnative plants which cause unnaturally high fire conditions for many of the desert ecosystems.

Zone fire staff has a strong working relationship with numerous federal, state and local cooperators in fire suppression and fuels management. Partners have included the Humboldt Toiyabe National Forest, Bureau of Land Management's Las Vegas, Carson City and Ely Field Offices, the US Navy (Fallon NAS), Fallon Paiute tribe and the National Parks Service's Lake Meade National Park.
