About the National Institute of Corrections

We are an agency within the U.S. Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Prisons. The Institute is headed by a Director appointed by the U.S. Attorney General. A 16-member Advisory Board, also appointed by the Attorney General, was established by the enabling legislation (Public Law 93-415) to provide policy direction to the Institute.

Related Programs

Women ARISE provides assistance to women returning from prison to their communities. Services include help obtaining employment, housing and basic necessities such as identification. Additionally the program offers cognitive behavioral therapy and wrap-around services, such as transportation, food, clothing etc.

Who is helped?

Women with histories of substance abuse, domestic violence, and/or incarceration. Capacity: Approximately 35 served per year.
