The Safe Harbor Mentoring Program is designed to assist people with a criminal/troubled past, who are being released from prison and need to focus on living socially acceptable and productive lives--some of them for the first time. Since its inception the program has expanded to reach out to women. About 75 women attend the Life Skills course on a weekly basis in both the Riverhead and East Meadow Correctional Facilities in Long Island. A referral service is also available to those who have participated in the program upon release. Safe Harbor has a referral guide to assist with the needs of those returning from incarceration.
Started in 1994

Who is helped?

Women who are incarcerated in the Riverhead and East Meadow Correctional facilities, women who have been formerly incarcerated, women with children, women with substance abuse issues. Capacity: 75 women participate in a weekly life skills course; many more take advantage of the referral service upon release.
