CCWP is a grassroots racial justice organization that challenges the institutional violence imposed on women and communities of color by prisons and the criminal justice system. They are building a movement with women prisoners, family members of prisoners, and the larger communities through organizing, leadership development, and political education. They do this by visiting prisons in order to build relationships with the women inside, and provide support regarding conditions of confinement. Peer counselor training enables women in prison to support one another. CCWP also publishes a newsletter called The Fire Inside, which provides a space for women prisoners and their supporters to communicate with each other and with the broader public about the issues and experiences women prisoners face through articles, art and poetry.
