The Cognitive Community Program at the Brunswick Women’s Reception and Pre-Release Center is grounded in a community setting, similar to a Therapeutic Community Program. However, the primary approach is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Various intervention tools are used that reflect CBT, such as thinking reports. The program’s goal is to successfully prepare the women for release and return to the community.
Groups include: Addiction & Criminal Lifestyle, Life skills/Cognitive Restructuring, Problem-Solving, etc. In addition, the program has collaborated with outside agencies to offer information pertinent to re-entry. Such topics include: probation and parole supervision, transitional housing, employment, women’s health, victim empathy/impact, etc. Special services, such as 12-Step Recovery Groups and Family Reunification Meetings, are available to program participants on a voluntary basis.
