About the National Institute of Corrections

We are an agency within the U.S. Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Prisons. The Institute is headed by a Director appointed by the U.S. Attorney General. A 16-member Advisory Board, also appointed by the Attorney General, was established by the enabling legislation (Public Law 93-415) to provide policy direction to the Institute.

The Pre-Release Program at the Virginia Correctional Center for Women provides valuable transitional services and resource information specific to each participant's needs. Topics covered include: parole procedures; legal issues workshops; employment workshops; financial management; productive citizenship; family relations; community resources; and personal growth. The groups meet Monday through Friday. The program lasts six months.

Women within 6 months of their release date. Capacity: Approximately 13 to 25 women in a group.
