GSA Prepares to Launch New Express Delivery Schedule

WASHINGTON - As the current express delivery contract nears its end, the U.S. General Services Administration is preparing to launch a new multiple award schedule for the first time since 1983 to meet the needs of the federal government's domestic express shipping needs. GSA's current, single-award contract will expire August 15, 2001.

"We are confident that the range of services provided through this new program will give GSA's customers the opportunity to tailor their delivery preferences, with a wide variety of sources to meet their specific needs," said GSA's Federal Supply Service Commissioner Donna Bennett.

GSA's decision to create a multiple award schedule for express delivery stems from the realization that many government agencies now require additional service options, more carrier diversity and a choice in selecting services and carriers. Now, as GSA prepares to oversee the debut of its new schedule, officials are encouraging its customers to define their new requirements as early as possible. The schedule will encompass delivery options ranging from small package to heavyweight, from same day to third day,

FedEx, GSA's third contract holder of domestic express delivery services since 1983, holds the current contract, which was awarded in 1996. FedEx also held the previous contract, awarded in 1991.
