Infrastructure Research and Technology Strategic Plan and Roadmap |
Project Findings: | Data not yet available |
Project Description: | The aim of this project is to develop a novel Roadway Wind/Solar Hybrid Power Generation and Distribution System (RHPS) towards energy-plus roadways, where energy-plus stands for annual energy consumption that is less than production. The RHPS would be a low footprint, intelligent, and multi-layer power system designed for integration into urban and suburban areas, which reduces the need for new distribution networks. The RHPS represents a dramatic change in the role of the public right-of-way from an energy consumer to an energy producer, and therefore will aid in reducing transportation system operating costs. |

FHWA Program Name: | Exploratory Advanced Research |
Goals: | The key project objective is to research and develop technology that could lead to transformational changes in the way that the public right-of-way is used to harvest and utilize renewable energy. |
Project Type: | Offsite |
Background Information: | Project submitted in response to a FY 2007 Exploratory Advanced Research Program Broad Agency Announcement Topic 3C: New Technologies for Renewable Energy Generation in the Public Right-of-Way. |
Test Methodology: | The test approach is a combination of mathematical energy and system modeling with full scale demonstration prototype and monitoring of public reaction. |
Other Information: | The project will be conducted in 3 distinct 12-month phases. |
