Office of Law Enforcement | Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, MD

The Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport’s North Cargo Complex is staffed by Wildlife Inspectors. The Wildlife Inspectors cover BWI Airport, the Port of Baltimore and the non-designated port of Norfolk where a total of over 2,500 wildlife entries are processed each year.

Wildlife Inspectors at BWI Airport deal with many hunters who are importing their trophies in either finished form or destined for a taxidermist. Hunters do not need to have a broker handle the clearance of their shipment. Hunters are not required to have an Import/Export License, but a new $37 premium inspection fee may apply if species requiring any permits are included in the shipment. Examples: Leopard, Elephant, Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra, African lion and Bontebok, to name a few.

Anyone who is importing or exporting a pet bird through the Baltimore area also needs to contact USDA/APHIS/Veterinary Services at 301/734-8364.

Baltimore also handles the entries into the non-designated Port of Norfolk. Importers/exporters who wish to clear wildlife products through Norfolk must have a Designated Port Exception Permit (DPEP) allowing them to use this port. Commercial importers/exporters must also have an Import/Export license. The base fee to have your wildlife products cleared in Norfolk is $136, as opposed to $87 at a designated port.

DPEP application: http://www.fws.gov/forms/3-200-2.pdf
Imp/Exp License application: http://www.fws.gov/forms/3-200-3.pdf
Both of these applications should be filed with the Valley Stream, NY office.

Please note that the fees referenced will gradually increase each year. The fee schedule up to 2012 can be found at: http://www.fws.gov/le/pdffiles/2009-2012FeeSchedule.011509.pdf.

The Inspection office is open from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday.

You can also contact the Resident Agent in Charge located in Richmond, Virginia which oversees this office.
