Message from the ACNW Chairman

The Advisory Committee on Nuclear Waste (ACNW) has revised its Action Plan to update the priority issues it will consider in FY 2005 and FY 2006. The updated plan is referred to as the “FY 2005 – FY 2006 Action Plan for the Advisory Committee on Nuclear Waste.” The Commission has approved the Plan (COMSECY-04-0077), and the Plan reflects Commission comments. The Action Plan establishes a framework for guiding the Committee in providing independent and timely technical advice to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission on nuclear waste disposal and radioactive material management issues. The Plan includes the first-tier priority issues the ACNW will address this year and second-tier priority issues it will address if time and resources permit, unless otherwise directed by the Commission.

The ACNW’s Action Plan is anchored to the NRC’s Draft Strategic Plan for FY 2004 – FY 2009 (NUREG 1614, Volume 3). The Action Plan is consistent with the ACNW’s Charter and the ACNW’s Operating Plan.

One of the ACNW’s most important goals in its Action Plan is to position itself to respond to the challenges and schedule uncertainties that lie ahead. Other important goals of the Committee include advising the Commission on bringing to bear the best science and technology in resolving key issues; bringing a risk-informed approach to the forefront of NRC decisionmaking; and improving public involvement and openness in the regulatory process. A final goal is to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of both NRC’s and ACNW’s operations.

We would appreciate any comments you have on the ACNW’s Action Plan. Please contact John Flack at (301) 415-0426 or by email to John.Flack@nrc.gov.

Michael T. Ryan
