Description |
MMS Engineers are faced with approving a variety of projects
that can be influenced by VIV (Deepwater risers, Pipeline spans over
irregular bottom topography subjected to strong bottom currents, onshore
elevated pipelines subjected to strong winds). MMS engineers need to be
aware of the potential for VIV to damage such structures and various options
that can be useful in mitigating VIV. Seminars will be developed and
delivered to MMS engineers to provide a basic understanding of VIV, describe
the potential for VIV to occur and how it might damage such structures, and
mitigation strategies that might be proposed for various offshore projects. |
Progress |
Project completed on December 7, 2004. A two-day seminar was held in New
Orleans on December 2-3, 2003 for MMS engineers to address VIV issues and
influences on offshore oil and gas operations. The seminar materials
are presented in the REPORTS section below. An outline of the
presentation follows.
SESSION 1 - FUNDAMENTALS OF VIV- DALTON
SESSION 2 – VIV AND DEEPWATER RISERS & TENDONS - LEVERETTE
Section 2a – VIV Applications to Deepwater Risers
Section 2b – Analysis of TLP VIV Responses to Eddy Currents
Section 2c – A High Mode Number Field Experiment - Leverette
SESSION 3(a and b*) – VIV APPLICATIONS TO DEEPWATER PIPELINES – BROWN
* The seminar material is presented in two sections (3a and 3b) due to
file size.
Due to a lack of video file support, some of the video presentations made
during the two day seminar could not be included. |
