COURSE LENGTH: 52 weeks

About the Program:
This course is designed for students who already possess significant oral proficiency primarily due to family heritage: they speak Spanish at home and/or are speakers of Spanish due to locality. The purpose of this course is to enable Spanish speaking students to enhance their proficiency through learning opportunities that address the DoDEA Foreign Language Standards of Communication, Cultures, Communities, Comparisons, and Connections. The course allows students to explore the cultures of the Hispanic world, including their own. It enables them to gain a better understanding of the nature of their own language. An emphasis is placed on developing the student’s Spanish literacy skills primarily through the use of technology. This course is conducted entirely in Spanish.

Major Concepts/Content: The goals, activities and projects of this course are with the DODEA Foreign Language Standards of Communication, Cultures, Communities, Comparisons, and Connections. This course incorporates all components of the communicative arts: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing as well as heightened exposure to social and cultural aspects of the language. Students interact about daily life, academic, and social situations by employing increasingly complex language structures and expanded vocabulary. Students acquire and use appropriate vocabulary and idiomatic expressions from a variety of Hispanic cultures by using interactive technology, print resources, and media. Students develop sensitivity about appropriate language for a variety of audiences and contexts. This course includes the development of the conventions of written Spanish. Students improve their literacy skills as they study various literary genres, authentic materials, electronic and print resources, and primary sources.

Major Evaluative Techniques: Assessments will measure the student’s ability to provide information in written and oral forms. They will discuss preferences, express emotions, express opinions, analyze, and hypothesize about information with peers and adults in school settings, with family and in the community. Students will demonstrate evidence of self-correction in their written and oral communications. Assessments will help determine student progress, provide useful information that guides instruction, and provide feedback to students and their parents. Assessments, formal and informal, will measure student performance and growth.
