SmartWay Certified Passenger Vehicles

Purchasing the most environmentally friendly vehicle can be a real challenge. Looking for the SmartWay mark when researching a vehicle purchase is one easy way to help you save fuel, money and the environment.

What are SmartWay Certified Passenger Vehicles?

Each model year, EPA rates vehicles for greenhouse gas and smog-forming emissions on a scale of 1-10 . For the SmartWay designation, a vehicle must receive a combined score that is much better than the average vehicle. The smog and greenhouse gas rating thresholds and SmartWay criteria are assessed annually to maintain our goal of designating the top 20 percent of vehicles every model year as SmartWay certified. Vehicles that receive SmartWay certification are very good environmental performers relative to other vehicles.

SmartWay Elite is given to those vehicles that attain the highest scores on both scales. The SmartWay Elite certification is reserved for the best environmental performers.

Model Year 2013

For Model Year (MY) 2013 and on, SmartWay greenhouse gas (GHG) and air pollution (smog) scores are based on the environmental ratings found on all new vehicle fuel economy labels.
