ST. CROIX - The sun was barely beaming through the mahogany tree canopy on Estate River Road early Thursday morning when 4-year-old Melanie Ferguson came stumbling out of the thick bush with her two small dogs by her side.
She had spent the night with her companions alone in the wilderness after wandering away from home almost 22 hours earlier - sparking a huge search effort involving about 100 law enforcement personnel Wednesday afternoon - but she was found alive and unharmed.

ST. THOMAS - Jimmy Buffett has a long, colorful history with the Virgin Islands, but Friday he started a new chapter by officially launching the first Margaritaville timeshare resort.
Buffett and Wyndham Vacation Ownership President and Chief Executive Officer Franz Hanning officially unveiled the first rendering of the new resort to a small crowd of St. Thomas government officials and members of the business community.

ST. THOMAS - Manav Thadani was on his knees, hands raised in prayer over a desk, just before the names of the eighth- through fifth-place finishers in the territorial MathCounts competition were read aloud Thursday.
He then raised his hands up and chanted under his breath, "Dream team! Dream team! Dream team!" as it became apparent that he and three other students from Antilles school would be the top four finishers and form the team that will represent the Virgin Islands in the May 10 national competition in Washington, D.C.

ST. CROIX - The V.I. Supreme Court has cleared the way for the retrial of three former Schneider Regional Medical Center executives after affirming the results of a Sept. 7, 2012, trial court opinion.
"The ultimate result reached by the Superior Court is affirmed based on this Court's consideration of the entire record and the totality of the circumstances, even if the Superior Court itself failed to do so," the V.I. Supreme Court opinion, released Friday, stated.

ST. CROIX - In the aftermath of St. Thomas-St. John Deputy Elections Supervisor Mabel Maduro's abrupt resignation this week, the Joint Board of Elections voted during a special meeting Friday to name that district's administrative assistant Sharon Benjamin the acting deputy supervisor of elections in that district.
The St. Thomas-St. John Board of Elections made the recommendation to the Joint Board to name Benjamin to the position.

ST. THOMAS - The former president of the police union for St. Thomas and St. John was arrested Friday on charges that he stole more than $60,000 from the union over three years.
Donald Liburd, 48, of Anna's Retreat, was arrested Friday on a warrant approved the day before by V.I. Superior Court Judge Kathleen Mackay. The warrant was based on an affidavit written by V.I. Justice Department special agent Kenneth Schulterbrandt Jr.
