The Fisheries Program

For more than 140 years the Fisheries Program has worked with States, Tribes, Federal agencies and other Service programs in fisheries conservation. The Fisheries Program’s 154 field stations work to conserve and restore habitat and ensure that fish and wildlife populations are sustained for the benefit of current and future generations of Americans. Many Fisheries Program field stations have a large land base whereby we play an important conservation role with pollinating species.

Field stations also help by incorporating pollinator education when opportunities arise. Creating butterfly gardens or pollinator areas on Fisheries property or working with students to establish a pollinator conservation project on school property provides a wonderful way to educate and connect with youth and the community. And, a pollinator area does not have to be big to be helpful. Using the space and resources available, Fisheries Friends groups and volunteers have helped create and build pollinator projects, such as the one at Genoa NFH.

The Atkinson Prairie and Pollinator Garden is receiving financial and technical support from the Service to plant over 400 native plants, install bat and bee houses, and develop interpretive signage encouraging students and parents to create backyard habitats conducive to native plants and pollinators.
