Chesapeake Bay Field Office
Annapolis, Maryland

The BayScapes garden we installed at our office building in June, 1997 is much more interesting to look at than the grass it replaced. It also attracts a variety of birds, including goldfinch, cardinals, chickadees and titmice. Big enough to include a small trail, the garden makes for a pleasant transition to and from the parking lot.

The Plant List
This plant list includes information on the characteristics and proper scientific name for each of the plants in the plan. *Most of the plants chosen for this planting are native to Maryland's coastal plain. The final planting did not follow every specification in the plant list or plan, and natural succession has since changed the plant compostion.

* Arctostaphylos (bearberry) is a northern species, and Echinacea (purple cone flower) is from the midwest. Several other selections are native to other eco-regions in Maryland. The USFWS BayScaping program currently recommends using native species, appropriate to the local eco-region.

Ground Prep
A sod cutter helps remove the turf.
