The House has voted 302 times this Congress to block action to address climate change, to halt efforts to reduce air and water pollution, to undermine protections for public lands and coastal areas, and to weaken the protection of the environment in other ways.  The Democratic staff of the Energy and Commerce Committee has released a report with an updated analysis of the anti-environment record of the House of Representatives in the 112th Congress and provided a searchable database of the anti-environment votes.

Rush sent a letter to Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton and Energy and Power Subcommittee Chairman Ed Whitfield urging them to hold a hearing on ocean acidification and its damage to sensitive marine ecosystems and species.  The warming and acidification of the oceans are already causing rapid declines in oyster production, endangering the already critically injured North Atlantic right whale, and affecting deep sea marine life.

Today Energy and Commerce Committee Ranking Member Henry A. Waxman and Energy and Power Subcommittee Ranking Member Bobby L. Rush sent a letter to Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton and Energy and Power Subcommittee Chairman Ed Whitfield requesting a hearing on the impact of climate change on the operation of the nation’s energy generation.  Recent reports indicate that record-breaking heat and drought conditions are forcing power plant operators to use less water to operate hydroelectric, coal-fired, and nuclear power plants, resulting in the shutdown of some nuclear plants as cooling water became either too warm or too scarce.
