Lehigh Valley Hazard Mitigation Plan Update
The residents of the Lehigh Valley are well aware of their vulnerability to natural hazards such as flooding, severe storms, and severe winter storms. Hazard mitigation planning is a step toward addressing these hazards and the effects on County residents and businesses and reducing future damages due to hazard events. Residents and businesses benefit from comprehensive hazard mitigation planning by using a sustained pro-active approach to reduce or eliminate long term risk to people and property from hazards. By utilizing mitigation planning, communities assess risks and identify actions to reduce their vulnerability and increase sustainability.
Lehigh and Northampton Counties are currently in the process of performing a regulatory 5-year update of our 2006 Lehigh Valley Hazard Mitigation Plan (HMP). HMPs are intended to provide a “blueprint” by which local governments can make coordinated, cost-effective efforts towards reducing losses from natural (flooding, severe storms, sinkholes, etc.) and non-natural (e.g. hazard material releases, fires and explosions) hazards. Further, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) requires local governments to develop and update HMPs every five years in order to remain eligible to receive federal grant funding for mitigation projects. Grant funding is available for eligible mitigation projects for both public and private property, including critical facilities (police, fire, schools, health care, etc.) and infrastructure.
This planning effort is being accomplished through a collaborative effort between the Lehigh County and Northampton County Emergency Management Offices, the Lehigh Valley HMP Steering Committee, and representatives from participating municipalities within the two counties. More information about this planning process may be found at the Lehigh Valley Hazard Mitigation Plan website by going to http://www.nc911.org/html/_____hazard_mitigation.html. |
