The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is an agency of the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) that protects communities from violent criminals, criminal organizations, the illegal use and trafficking of firearms, the illegal use and storage of explosives, acts of arson and bombings, acts of terrorism, and the illegal diversion of alcohol and tobacco products. ATF maintains a work force of special agents, certified fire investigators, certified explosives specialists, national response teams, intelligence research specialists, forensic auditors, technical operations officers, and support staff that are available to assist State and local fire service and law enforcement agencies upon request.
