Notice to Parents Of 7th-12th Graders

New Law for 2011-2012 California School Children

Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) is now a REQUIRED vaccine for 7th - 12th graders for the 2011-12 school year.

For the 2011-2012 school year California has required all children entering grades 7-12 have the Tdap vaccine. Tdap safely protects against three dangerous diseases: tetanus, diphtheria, and whooping cough (also called pertussis). Whooping cough has been increasing in the U.S. and continues to be widespread in California. For the 2012-13 and beyond, only students entering 7th grade will need proof of a Tdap vaccine.

Since 2005, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices and the CDC have recommended Tdap for 11-12 year-olds nationwide. This federal government recommendation has also been extended to adults.

Consult your primary care manager for more information. If you are assigned to one of the Tricare outpatient clinics, Branch Health Clinics or NMCSD, you can contact 619-532-8225 for additional information.
