The Healthcare Bubble and How to Survive It

Is there a healthcare bubble? The experts waffle, but facts are facts; between 1999 and 2011, government spending on healthcare increased 240 percent while GDP increased 62 percent. Health insurance premiums, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation, have increased 168 percent between 1999 and 2011 while earnings increased only 50 percent (Foy, 2012). Such vast and rapid increases are not sustainable. “The unfortunate fact is that Americans spend twice as much on healthcare as people in other developed countries, but receive lower quality care and less efficiency” (Colombo, 2012). New grad Job in a pain clinic but very hesitant to stay

Hi I'm a new grad that started a job in a pain clinic a week ago. I am debating quitting as some things have raised red flags such as: super high turnover rate, training was only a week, the person who trained me graduated 6 months ago(she is their most seasoned nurse), I've been told to make up vitals, told my sterile fields "don't really need to be sterile", iv's started by medical assistance and they pass meds too. I am scared for my license. I hate to be a quitter after such a short time but I feel the environment is unsafe. Any thoughts? So confused. Read

I feel very overwhelmed about my clinicals.

Today I had my clinicals and we had to do flu shots. I am the only one in my group that hasn't had any experience. I am also the youngest one. The first day in clinicals we had to do vitals and everyone in my class knew how to do these. i did not. My instructor asked me to do them and I told her I did not know how to do it so she told me to ask one of my classmates to help me. That day went ok. Today we had to do flu shots. I Have never given a flu shot (or any injection) in my life! I was scared. My professor told us to read over the weekend about it but I forgot, that was my fault and I... Read

House Dust Protein Worsens Allergic Asthma

FRIDAY, Oct. 19 (HealthDay News) -- A bacterial protein found in house dust can promote the development of allergic asthma in response to indoor allergens, according to a letter published online Oct. 14 in Nature Medicine. Rhonda H. Wilson, Ph.D., from the National Institutes of Health in Research Triangle Park, N.C., and colleagues examined whether bacterial components of household dust could act as allergic adjuvants in mice, and examined allergic responses in wild-type mice or mice lacking the Tlr4 or Tlr5 gene (receptors of the innate immune response that recognize common features of... Favorite trade journal?

Hey all,As an SRNA I am thinking forward and wondering what your favorite trade journals are? I'd like to start reading one, something heavy on both science and clinical studies. Doesn't have to be CRNA.specific, just anesthesia specific. Anything that will both help me prepare for clinicals and keep me current in my practice. Thanks! Read

RN-BSN in San Diego, CA

I am a registered nurse with an ADN from Kaplan. I am currently working full time on a surgical acute floor for one of the largest healthcare/hospital providers in SD county. I am trying to decide where I should get my BSN. My options are limited due to the fact that I am a Kaplan grad. Every state school I have looked into will not accept a single transfer credit from Kaplan, which means I'd have to take all the basic gen-ed coursework again before I could even apply to an RN-BSN program. I know that I want to continue my education, and eventually go for an MSN/APN, but it is too early... Read
