Current Job Openings at the Center for Functional Nanomaterials

Postdoctoral Research Associate - Self Assembly of Functional Polymers (6325) - The Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) is currently soliciting applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work on a collaboration between the Soft Materials and Electronic Materials groups. The research involves studying thin films of novel semiconducting block-copolymers, both to understand fundamental questions of ordering and self-assembly, and to advance the state-of-the-art in organic photovoltaics. The qualified candidate will have a Ph.D. in the appropriate discipline (e.g. Chemistry, Materials Science, Physics), and a solid background in polymer self-assembly. Significant technical experience with thin-film preparation and characterization is a must (e.g. spin-coating, ellipsometry, SEM, AFM). It is considered an asset to have experience in one or more of the following fields: block-copolymers, organic photovoltaics, optics, or scattering. Most importantly, the successful applicant will demonstrate an ability to work independently within broadly defined research directions, and to collaborate between research thrusts. Under the direction of K. Yager, Center for Functional Nanomaterials.BNL policy stipulates that research associate appointments may be made to individuals who have received their doctorate within the past five years.BNL is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer committed to the development of a diverse workforce. Job No. 16113. Log in to the Candidate Gateway to apply for this position.

Postdoctoral Research Associate - Hybrid Photovoltaic Devices (6329) - The Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN) has a postdoctoral research associate position available for a highly motivated person with a Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science or related discipline. Most desirable candidates will have excellent communication skills, ability to work in a multidisciplinary environment, and experimental expertise interfacing soft-matter self-assembly, semiconductor device nanofabrication, and/or time-resolved spectroscopy. The successful candidate will develop advanced hybrid photovoltaic devices which will combine self-assembled nanoparticle light-harvesting structures with inorganic semiconductor nanowire device platforms. The Research Associate will work with a team of scientists in the Electronic Nanomaterials and Soft-Bio Materials groups of CFN with state-of-the-art facilities for nanofabrication/measurement, soft-matter self-assembly, and single-molecule spectroscopy. Postdoctoral Research Associate - Heterostructures of 2D Materials (6324) - The Center for Functional Nanomaterials at Brookhaven National Laboratory seeks to fill an opening for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in a project on the synthesis of heterostructures of 2D materials and measurements of their structural and electronic properties. Materials of interest include graphene, hexagonal boron nitride and other 2D systems. The scientific focus will be on exploring processes for the formation and analysis of heterostructures in which different 2D materials are integrated in single atomically thin membranes or in arbitrary stacks of monolayer sheets, key to the future usage of such engineered structures in energy conversion and storage, catalysis, and sensing. The research will utilize state-of-the-art synthesis facilities combined with in-situ microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (XPS) in UHV, as well as ex-situ characterization and electronic transport. Requires a Ph.D. in physics, chemistry, materials science, or a related discipline. Demonstrated experience in general UHV methods, and in epitaxial growth or STM is required. Submit CV, publication list and a brief (1 page) statement of research experience and interests as a single document (PDF or Word document). Postdoctoral Research Associate - Electronic Nanomaterials (6281) - The Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN) at Brookhaven National Laboratory is currently soliciting applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Electronic Nanomaterials gropu. The research involves using self-assembly methods in combination with more conventional nanofabrication tools for fabricating nanostructured solar devices. This project is laboratory intensive -- much of the work involves device fabrication, characterization, and measurement. The qualified candidate will have a Ph.D. in an appropriate discipline (Physics, Electrical Engineering, or Materials Science), and significant experience with thin-film fabrication of nanostructured materials and devices. Expertise in nanometer-scale materials characterization and analysis, as well as electrical device test and measurement experience are important.
