Holiday Decorations PSA: "Put a Freeze on Winter Fires" Campaign, December 2011 Decorating homes is a long-standing tradition around the holiday season. Unfortunately, these same decorations may increase your chances of fire. Prevent holiday fires by using nonflammable or flame-retardant decorations and place them away from heat vents. Consider using battery-operated candles. Inspect holiday lights for excessive wear before putting them up. Don’t leave your live Christmas tree up for longer than two weeks and keep the tree stand filled with water at all times.
