Design and Construction

As landlord of the civilian federal government, GSA is responsible for a wide range of design and construction projects. Given GSA’s commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency, Applied Research is always looking for ways to improve how GSA designs and builds federal properties.

Applied Research collaborates with various business lines to identify relevant research opportunities. Notable research partners include GSA’s Office of Design and Construction, GSA’s Office of Client Solutions, and the U.S. Department of Energy.

Recent projects that support design and construction include the following:

  • Life Cycle Inventory Database – a database of environmental impacts that supports more responsible use of equipment and materials in building design and construction
  • Land Ports of Entry – in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Applied Research developed new strategies for reducing energy use at LPOEs
