HISTORYStaff The first Navy liaison officer/instructor reported to the Command and General Staff College in 1931. This officer was given the title "Naval Advisor, Naval Military Cooperation.” In 1946, a Navy Captain was assigned as a Naval advisor and was joined by a Marine Colonel to form the Naval Section. Manning of the Section was increased in 1953 and again in 1958 when three officers from each service were assigned. The Navy staff included one Captain, one Commander, and one Lieutenant Commander. In 1965, the Naval Section was separated into two its elements: a Navy Element and a Marine Corps Element. This remains in effect today. Students The first U.S. Navy student to graduate from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College was from the Class of 1945. The number of students slowly increased and the largest class of U.S. Navy students was 61 graduates in 2006, the first year CGSC had a winter and summer class. Note that, with the passage of the Goldwater-Nichols Act in 1986, greater numbers of Navy students were encouraged to attend and by 1991 the numbers had increased dramatically. Of note, nine Navy graduates have gone on to become Admirals, with six continuing to serve today. Navy Students at the Advanced Military Studies Program (AMSP) The Advanced Military Studies Program (AMSP) at the School of Advanced Military Studies (SAMS) is designed as a 1 year follow-on course to the CGSOC to provide selected officers with the opportunity to continue concentrated study at the tactical and operational levels of war. AMSP graduates are conferred a Masters of Military Arts and Sciences Degree. Navy students began attending AMSP with the class of 1992. Navy Students at Advanced Operational Art Studies Fellowship Program (AOASF) The Fort Leavenworth Advanced Operational Art Studies Fellowship Program (AOASF) is a senior staff college level fellowship taught at the School of Advanced Military Studies (SAMS). Focused at the operational and strategic levels of war, AOASF is a two-year Senior Service College-level course that prepares senior officers for Colonel-level command and for operational planning assignments to combatant and service component commands.
