Process Heating System Assessment – 1-day workshop

Availability: Onsite instructor-led and online self-paced workshop

This workshop provides an introduction to process heating and process heating equipment, such as furnaces, dryers, ovens, heaters, and kilns, used by industry. The course includes discussion of combustion and other heating methods; heat transfer in furnaces; waste heat recovery; commonly used process heating controls; and emissions from heating processes.

Attend this workshop if you are a process engineer, plant operator, maintenance engineer, process heating equipment designer, plant or corporate energy coordinator, or consulting engineer and learn:

    • Practical tips on process heating and maintenance
    • How to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions from furnaces
    • How to use PHAST software

The session highlights the application of PHAST, which helps users survey furnaces and heaters, identify major energy-using equipment, prioritize improvement opportunities, and assess available methods to improve thermal efficiency in an industrial plant.

If you are interested in attending an instructor-led workshop, see the Training Calendar for upcoming sessions in your area. Visit the DOE Learning Management System if you are interested in taking an online, self-paced workshop. Users are required to register on the LMS to access trainings. Become a Qualified PHAST Specialist – 2-day workshop

    Availability: Onsite instructor-led

DOE and the Industrial Heating Equipment Association (IHEA) offer the Qualified PHAST Specialist program; participants who successfully complete a qualification workshop and exam receive the designation of Qualified Specialist in the use of the PHAST software tool. Qualified PHAST Specialists apply the PHAST tool to accurately gather pertinent system information and provide realistic "what if" scenarios for process heating system operation. These specialists have a thorough understanding of:

    • How to use PHAST software
    • How to accurately collect and input data for PHAST
    • What information sources, instruments and measurement devices to use for collection of necessary data required for use of PHAST
    • How to use PHAST to evaluate a process heating system and develop a measurement plan

To learn more about the Qualified PHAST Specialist training, please contact the Training Coordinator. Check the Training Calendar for announcements of upcoming PHAST qualification workshops.
