CGSC Intermediate Level Education

Prospective Interagency Students

The US Army Command & General Staff School (CGSS) provides graduate-level education to all the Army’s majors (FS-03 equivalent) along with students from the Air Force, Navy, Marines, and Coast Guard, as well as interagency students (DOS, HHS, DHS, USAID, NGA), and international military officers to develop them for command of large units and staff assignments.  The CGSS curriculum is designed to educate adult learners on the uses of military power at the operational and tactical levels in small collaborative seminars of 16 students.  The overall student to faculty ratio is 4:1. The goal of CGSS is to develop operational expertise in employing joint, interagency and multinational forces and capabilities in offensive, defensive, civil support, and stability and reconstruction operations.  The 44-week course offered at Fort Leavenworth, KS, encompasses a Core Curriculum, an Advanced Operations and Warfighting Course, a choice of over 170 electives, and an optional program to obtain a Master of Military Art and Science degree in a thesis topic of the student’s choosing.  Previous graduates of CGSS include George C. Marshall, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Colin L. Powell, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono of Indonesia, and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong of Singapore.  General David Petraeus is also a graduate of CGSS.

Fort Leavenworth is the oldest continuously operating military installation west of the Mississippi River.  Known for its campus setting, open green spaces and historic, small-town character, it occupies 5,600 acres on the west bank of the Missouri River.  Rental student housing is available on a first-come, first-serve basis.  K-9 schooling on post, as well as various recreation and leisure activities for students and their families, are also available.  CGSS seeks highly motivated FS-03 and FS-02 officers with strong written and oral communication skills.  A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is necessary, but no prior military service, Pol-Mil experience, or GRE exam is required. Further information on the course can be found at the tabs above.
