The United States Trustee Program is a component of the
Justice Department that works to ensure the integrity of
the bankruptcy system across the nation.
The United States Trustee's duties include appointing and
supervising the private trustees who administer bankruptcy
cases under Chapter 7, 12, and 13; reviewing bankruptcy
cases for fraud and abuse, and referring criminal matters
to United States Attorneys for prosecution; and monitoring
the progress of Chapter 11 business reorganization cases.
The United States Trustee Program was created as a pilot
program in 1978. Congress expanded the Program eight years
later, and it now operates in all states except North Carolina
