ANNOTATION: Findings of this telephone survey indicate that in prisons of six states (Connecticut, Kansas, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, and the Muncy facility in Pennsylvania) and the Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBP) cross-sex pat searches of women are performed routinely. Most of the 49 states (Alaska was not contacted) report that same sex or cross-sex pat searches of women are done only in an emergency. In many men's institutions, the practice is different. They report having a split policy in which women may pat-search male inmates.
