A greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory is an accounting of greenhouse gases emitted to or removed from the atmosphere over a period of time. Examples of GHG inventories completed by local governments in the following states are available below.

Flagstaff

In August 2008, the City of Flagstaff released its official GHG emissions inventory, forecasts, and reduction targets, as outlined in its “Greenhouse Gas Emissions Management Program.”

Berkeley
City Population: 101,371
In April 2007, The City of Berkeley published its “Baseline Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory Report,” which is being used to help the city adopt an emissions reduction target and develop an emissions reduction action plan.
Fort Bragg
City Population: 6,604
In collaboration with the Mendocino Air Quality Management District and ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability, the City of Fort Bragg released its greenhouse gas inventory in August 2007.
Menlo Park
City Population: 30,087
In November 2007, the City of Menlo Park released its “Greenhouse Gas Emissions Analysis,” which includes estimates of greenhouse gas emissions resulting from the City's internal municipal operations as well as those from the community as a whole.

The publication of the City of Aspen's Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory in January 2006 represents the successful completion of one of the initial steps of the city's implementation of its wider climate action program, the Canary Initiative.

In April 2005, Mayor John Hickenlooper launched “Greenprint Denver,” an initiative to reduce Denver's environmental footprint. The publication of the “Greenhouse Gas Inventory for the City & County of Denver” in May 2007 represents the completion of a key component of one of the initiative's goals.

In support of Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin's initiative for a sustainable Atlanta, a student-faculty team from the Georgia Institute of Technology with the City published “The City of Atlanta's Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory” in March 2009.

In 2008, the City of Chicago released its “Chicago Greenhouse Gas Emissions: An Inventory, Forecast, and Mitigation Analysis for Chicago and the Metropolitan Region.” The report is part of an effort to provide an accounting of the greenhouse gas emissions of Chicago and the six county region, develop a forecast for future emissions, and research a set of mitigation strategies that could reduce the City's emissions to 25 percent below 1990 levels by 2020.

The “Community Greenhouse Gas Inventory and Forecast,” published by the City of Evanston in March 2008, will allow the city to more effectively target greenhouse gas reduction activities and provide a baseline from which to measure emission reduction progress in future years.

As part of the city's committment to the “Mayors Climate Challenge,” the City of Bloomington published its “Greenhouse Gas Inventory for the City of Bloomington, Indiana: Footprint, Projections, and Recommendations” in May 2009.

The “City of New Orleans Carbon Footprint Report,” published in July 2009, details the City's activities and findings as a participant in the Cities for Climate Protection (CCP) Campaign and offers a GHG inventory, descriptions of ongoing and proposed reduction measures, and recommendations for going forward.

“Energy Consumption and Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory of the City of Annapolis in 2006,” published in 2008, was commissioned by the Mayor Ellen O. Moyer's energy efficiency task force and represents the city's successful completion of one step of the Cities for Climate Protection's milestone program.

The Northfield Energy Task Force, created by the Northfield City Council in May 2007 to respond to energy and climate challenges, published “With Hope: A Resilient Community – An Action Plan for Northfield Area Energy Sustainability” in June 2008. A greenhouse gas inventory is included in Appendix 3 of the report.

“Baseline Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory for 2005,” published in August 2008, was commissioned by the Recycling, Environment and Beautification Committee of the City of Creve Coeur as an initial step toward reducing the city's GHG emissions.

As part of its PlaNYC program, the City of New York publishes annual Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventories. “Inventory of New York City Greenhouse Gas Emissions: September 2010” is one recent example.

The City and County of Durham commissioned the 2007 document, “City of Durham & Durham County: Greenhouse Gas and Criteria Air Pollutant Emissions Inventory and Local Action Plan for Emissions Reductions,” to help develop a GHG and criteria air pollution inventory and action plan for the Durham community.

Completed in January 2009, “The Chattanooga Climate Action Plan” includes a GHG inventory for the city of Chattanooga, an overview of carbon-reducing policies, and recommended steps to lower Chattanooga's carbon footprint.

Mayor Karl Dean's Green Ribbon Committee on Environmental Sustainability published the “Baseline Inventory of Greenhouse Gas Emissions for the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County” in February 2009.

The “Community Carbon Footprint and Roadmap to Reduction,” published in March 2009, contains a carbon inventory for Park City, Utah and an action plan for reducing its greenhouse gas emissions.
Vermont

The city of Burlington, Vermont, completed its preliminary city operations and community-wide GHG inventories in 2008 and plans to publish regular updates on its Web site.

In March 2008, the Town of Blacksburg published the “Blacksburg Energy and Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory,” successfully meeting a goal of the US Mayors' Climate Protection Agreement and the first milestone of the ICLEI Cities for Climate Protection Program.

The “City of Bellingham Greenhouse Gas Inventory and Climate Protection Action Plan,” published in May 2007, includes a greenhouse gas inventory, a survey of the policy response to global warming, and a forecast of expected increases in GHGs in the near term.

Greenhouse Gas Emissions in King County quantifies 2008 emissions from the entire King County community including governments, residents and business, presenting results from two different, but complementary, inventories of GHG emissions: a geographic based inventory and a consumption based inventory. The website also features GHG reduction strategies.
