Debbie Matz was nominated by President Barack Obama to serve as the eighth board chair of the National Credit Union Administration. Mrs. Matz is no stranger to NCUA and credit unions, having served as a board member at NCUA from January 2002 to October 2005.

NCUA has a full-time, three-member board appointed by the President of the United States and confirmed by the Senate. No more than two board members can be from the same political party, and each member serves a staggered six-year term.

The Office of the Executive Director and the 11 central offices oversee the day-to-day operation of the National Credit Union Administration, the federal agency that charters and supervises the nation’s federal credit unions and insures the vast majority of credit union member deposits.

The Office of General Counsel has responsibility for all legal matters affecting NCUA, including: representing the agency in litigation; bringing enforcement actions against directors, managers and other parties affiliated with credit unions; providing interpretations of the Federal Credit Union Act and NCUA Rules and Regulations to the agency and to outside parties; processing Freedom of Information Act requests and appeals; advising the Board and the agency on general legal matters; and drafting regulations designed to ensure the safety and soundness of credit unions.
