Pueblo Reservoir

Time to celebrate! August 2012 marks a historical time for the Fryingpan-Arkansas water project. It is now officially 50 years old!

Equally exciting is the new commemorative film by Reclamation summarizing the proud legacy of the project. The Fryingpan-Arkansas Project film, Fifty Years of Golden Benefits will be premiered at the event weekend, August 17-18.

Arkansas Valley Conduit

Reclamation is pleased to announce the availability of the draft Environmental Impact Statement for the Arkansas Valley Conduit and Long Term Excess Capacity Master Contract. The Draft EIS and related documents can be viewed on the AVCEIS website.

Water Operations

In May, Reclamation announced we anticipated diverting only about 12,400 acre-feet from Colorado's West Slope to the East Slope via the Fryingpan-Arkansas Project. By early June, we had slightly exceeded that number, diverting about 14,000 acre-feet.

That same month we shut down the 16 diversion dams on the west slope--one of the earliest shut-downs for those sites in our operating history.

The Voluntary Flow Program on the Arkansas River for white water ran until August 15. Through the VFP, Reclamation coordinates closely with project partners and the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Department. This collaboration helps manage flows in the river so they best benefit both the fly fishing and white water industries. The Arkansas is one of the most heavily recreated rivers in the world.

Construction Work

Visitors to Pueblo Reservoir will notice construction on the new North Outlet Works below Pueblo Dam is complete. Tests of the river gate were conducted during June and all is working well. The Southern Delivery System pipeline being built by Colorado Springs Utilities, Pueblo West, Fountain, and the Security Water District will eventually connect to this gate house. Soon, construction will move away from the dam as the municipalities working on the actual pipeline.

Pueblo Reservoir is the final storage vessel for the Fry-Ark Project. To learn more about it and the Fry-Ark Project, please contact Kara Lamb.
