Our Unique Research Facilities

Brookhaven scientists and visiting researchers are using state-of-the art facilities to solve fundamental questions and develop practical solutions to global challenges, from energy security to human health.

Center for Functional Nanomaterials                National Synchrotron Light Source                   Positron Emission Tomography

Center for Functional Nanomaterials

A premier user facility. While developing strong scientific programs, it offers broad access to its capabilities through an active user program. This Center provides researchers with state-of-the-art capabilities to fabricate and study nanoscale materials. The Center's focus is to achieve a basic understanding of how these materials respond when in nanoscale form. Nanomaterials offer different chemical and physical properties than bulk materials, and have the potential to form the basis of new technologies. Learn more...

National Synchrotron Light Source

One of the world’s most widely used scientific light source facilities for research in diverse fields such as biology and medicine, chemistry and environmental sciences, physics, and materials science.  A new more powerful light source, NSLS-II, is designed to deliver world-leading intensity and brightness, and will produce x-rays more than 10,000 times brighter than the current NSLS. NSLS-II will become operational in 2014. More about NSLS and NSLS-II.

PET and MRI Facilities

Brookhaven has all the resources needed for utilizing PET and MRI imaging in drug development, from producing radioisotopes, to designing and synthesizing radiolabeled drugs and tracers, to writing and implementing protocols to running animal and human studies. Learn more...
