Like the tide on a beach, the weight of yo-yo dieters fluctuates. It’s not one specific diet. Yo-yo dieters struggle to keep lost weight off, losing it and gaining it back in cycles. A longevity study compared lifespan for mice on a high fat diet, a low fat diet, and a yo-yo diet.

Dr. Edward List is at Ohio University.

“Yo-yo dieting was indeed healthier than remaining obese.” (5 seconds)

The majority of people who diet are considered yo-yo dieters. For those struggling with weight problems, Dr. List suggests:

“First and foremost, people lose weight one time, diet and exercise, and keep it off. Live a healthy lifestyle.” (8 seconds)

The study, supported by the National Institutes of Health, was presented at the 2011 Endocrine Society meeting, in Boston.
