Indoor Air Quality Research

Introduction
Indoor Air Quality research focuses on Improving the techniques used to measure and model emissions of indoor air chemical contaminants present in free standing structures.  Research is dedicated to investigating various approaches to eliminating mold problems in residence and office buildings.

We focus on improving techniques to measure and model emissions of indoor chemical contaminants present in a variety of  structures (schools, office buildings and residences), and investigate a variety of approaches to ameliorate mold problems in residences and office buildings.

Our research focuses on improving techniques to measure and model emissions of indoor chemical contaminants present in a variety of structures (schools, office buildings and residences):

  • PFOA (fluoro-telemers and –polymers)
  • Near roadway mitigation
  • Evaluates cook stoves (used in developing countries) for pollutant emissions that affect indoor air quality, human health, and global climate change. This research supports PCIA (Partnership for Clean Indoor Air) and the recently formed GACC (Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves).

We Investigate a variety of approaches to ameliorate mold problems in residences and office buildings:

  • Recent efforts focus on preventing mold growth on wallboard

Also our research supports the Agency’s Homeland Security program by investigating all aspects associated with how to decontaminate buildings where chemical or biological warfare agents have been dispersed. New strategic direction to address green buildings, area of rapidly growing interest

The objective of EPA research program is to conduct leading edge research and foster the sound use of science and technology to fulfill EPA’s mission to protect human health and safeguard the natural environment.

The long-term goal of the Indoor Environment Research program is to provide risk assessors, EPA program office clients, EPA regions, and other stakeholders with the scientific foundation for making sound decisions regarding indoor environment risk management by identifying and characterizing sources of indoor air pollution, and evaluate risk management options to improve indoor environment quality and to develop environmentally sustainable approaches for the built environment. We meet the following EPA Goals:
