Regional Radon Training Centers

The Indoor Radon Abatement Act (IRAA) of 1988 authorized EPA to establish four Regional Radon Training Centers (RRTCs).  The mission of the RRTCs is to develop information and provide training to government officials, professional and private firms, and the public on radon health risks and methods of radon measurement and mitigation.

There is also contact information on the Regional Radon Training Centers via the National Consortium of Regional Radon Training Centers at:  www.radoncourses.org/ exiting EPA

Eastern Regional Radon Training Center (ERRTC)

Serves Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia and West Virginia (13 states and DC).

[Overview pulled directly from their site] "Our mission is to provide training regarding health risks posed by radon and other indoor environmental hazards and to demonstrate methods of radon measurement and mitigation in residential, institutional, and commercial environments.  ERRTC collaborates with EPA, state radon program units, industry, our Regional Training Center colleagues and national certifying bodies, to create and delivery high-value and high-quality programs and outreach services in the science and business of radon measurement and mitigation and Indoor Air Quality.  The ERRTC is located at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ within the Office of Continuing Professional Education.  In addition to its training programs, the center works closely with the EPA on applied research, demonstration and outreach projects to improve public understanding of radon health risks and to identify the most cost-effective methods to reduce that risk."

Southern Regional Radon Training Center (SRRTC)

[Overview pulled directly from their site]  "The Southern Regional Radon Training Center (SRRTC), is based in the Engineering Continuing Education (ENGCE) was established as one of four regional radon training centers in the United States.  SRRTC is managed through Auburn University and the ENGCE to provide assistance and training to the states of: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas."

"The mission of the RRTC's is to develop educational materials, provide training to government officials, professional and private firms, and the public on radon health risks, and methods of radon measurement and mitigation. To accomplish this mission, the RRTCs charge for services n order to achieve financial self-sufficiency.  SRRTC provides training for builders, realtors, architects, home inspectors, HVAC contractors, public health officials and others wishing to become certified as a radon measurement or mitigation specialists."

"A primary function of SRRTC is to provide technical training courses related to radon measurement and mitigation for persons who wish to provide professional radon services. SRRTC also targets other groups for training about radon problems that may impact citizens in their homes, schools and workplaces. For instance, homebuilders are taught radon resistant new construction techniques and home inspectors are taught skills for inspecting radon mitigation systems during a typical home inspection."

Midwest Universities Radon Consortium (MURC)

About the Program [pulled directly from their site]: "The Midwest Universities Radon Consortium (MURC) is a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) established Regional Radon Training Center (RRTC) founded in 1988 in cooperation with institutions of higher education, states, and industry. MURC's mission is to reduce the loss of life due to lung cancer caused by indoor radon. We pursue this mission by training professionals in health risk assessment, risk communication, radon measurement, and radon control in new and existing homes and other buildings..."

MURC offers courses approved for certification by the National Environmental Health Association, National Radon Proficiency Program (NEHA-NRPP) and the National Radon Safety Board (NRSB). Our courses are also approved by many licensing states and non-licensing states often require NEHA-NRPP or NRSB certification.

MURC is located at and managed by the University of Minnesota in cooperation with Kansas State University. When you complete a MURC course you receive a course completion certificate from the University of Minnesota. For Further Information - www.cce.umn.edu/Radon-Courses-for-Professionals exiting EPA

Western Regional Radon Training Center (WRRTC) at the University of Colorado

Overview [pulled directly from their site] "The Western Regional Radon Training Center was created as a consequence of the Indoor Radon Abatement Act, approved by Congress in the late 1980's. The center was moved by Region 8 EPA in 1995 to the campus of the University of Colorado and Colorado Springs, where it still resides, and Dr. James F. Burkhart was named its director. The Western Regional Radon Training Center (WRRTC) has offered many specialized courses in radon (i.e.; radon in water, radon reduction systems for new homes, measurement and mitigation courses for school personnel, etc.). You will also find that we offer a variety of on-line, video, and mail courses for professionals needing continuing education credits for NEHA and/or NRSB certifications."

Our Radon measurement and mitigation courses are routinely offered on the campus at the University of Colorado, located in Colorado Springs.
