Ambassador Johnnie Carson, Assistant Secretary for African Affairs, will deliver a keynote speech at the United States Institute of Peace during a program titled “The United States’ Efforts to Combat the Lord's Resistance Army” from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. on December 7, 2011.
He will be joined by Ambassador William M. Bellamy, Director, Africa Center for Strategic Studies; and Michael Poffenberger, Co-founder and Executive Director, Resolve. Ambassador George E. Moose, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors, U.S. Institute of Peace, will provide welcoming remarks and Raymond Gilpin, Director for Sustainable Economies, United States Institute of Peace, will moderate the session.
Assistant Secretary Carson will describe ongoing U.S. efforts to support regional partners in mitigating and eliminating the threat posed by the LRA, including the recent decision to deploy U.S. military advisers to work with regional militaries. He will also discuss new opportunities and continuing challenges for this regional effort.
