Ambassador Melanne S. Verveer Travel to Bonn, Germany and Durban, South Africa

Melanne Verveer, Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues, will travel to Bonn, Germany from December 3 through December 5, 2011 to participate in the International Afghanistan Conference: From Transition to Transformation. She will then travel to Durban, South Africa to participate in the 17th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change from December 6 through December 8, 2011.

In Bonn, Ambassador Verveer will deliver remarks at a press conference regarding the critical role of women to the future stability and security in Afghanistan. Ambassador Verveer will also meet with Afghan civil society leaders and government officials and will participate in multiple events focused on the central role of Afghan women leaders socially, politically, and economically to Afghanistan’s future. She will also have meetings with representatives from foreign governments and civil society organizations.

In Durban, Ambassador Verveer will participate in a leaders’ meeting on gender and climate change. She will then co-lead an open panel discussion on the outcomes of this meeting and advancing progress on gender and climate change at the U.S. Center. In addition, Ambassador Verveer will co-host an NGO roundtable discussion on gender and climate policy recommendations with USAID Assistant Administrator Eric Postel. The Ambassador will also attend several additional side events and meet with representatives from the United Nations, foreign governments, and civil society organizations.

Ambassador Verveer will return to Washington, D.C. on December 9, 2011.
