Air Marshal Sir Christopher Harper elected as new Director General IMS

Sibiu, Romania, 15 September - Today, the Chiefs of Defence of the 28 NATO nations elected Air Marshal Sir Christopher Harper of the United Kingdom as the new Director General of the International Military Staff (DGIMS) at NATO Headquarters. The DGIMS is elected among his peers, the NATO Military Representatives, to head the Alliance’s International Military Staff, for a term of 3 years. Air Marshal Sir Christopher Harper will assume his new function in summer 2013.

Military Committee takes forward Chicago Summit decisions

Sibiu, 15 September,- Chiefs of Defence (CHODs) and Military Representatives (MRs) of the twenty-eight NATO countries concluded the Military Committee Conference in the city of Sibiu, Romania, hosted by the Romanian Chief of Defence, General Stefan Danila. General Knud Bartels, Chairman of the Military Committee (CMC), led the high-level military discussions during the first major official gathering of NATO’s military authorities following the Chicago Summit and ahead of the Defence Ministerial in Brussels (October 2011).

NATO Military Committee Conference - Sibiu, Romania, 14-16 September 2012

Bucharest - NATO’s Military Committee, the highest military decision-making forum, will meet in Chiefs of Defence (CHODs) session from 14-16 September, in Sibiu. The meeting of the 28 CHODs will be hosted by Lieutenant General Ştefan Dănilă, Romanian CHOD, to discuss ongoing NATO operations and other key issues on NATO’s agenda.

Statement by the NATO Secretary General on the Benghazi attack

I strongly condemn the attack on the US mission in Benghazi which led to the tragic loss of four Americans, including the Ambassador. Such violence can never be justified. I offer my deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives and my thoughts are with those who are injured.

Latest Transatlantic Trends report shows strong support for NATO

The 11th edition of the Transatlantic Trends survey has been published on 12 September 2012. Ahead of the report’s release, officials from the German Marshall Fund previewed some of the key findings to members of delegations and the International Staff at NATO HQ. The latest version of the annual public opinion survey shows continued support for NATO on both sides of the Atlantic, with a majority of Americans and Europeans believing that the Alliance is vital to the security of their countries.

NATO’s partners in the South Caucasus

Last week, NATO’s Secretary General visited the South Caucasus – a region that is strategically important to the Alliance.
