TAPS Blog | "On September 11, 2001, my husband was killed in the terrorist attack on the Pentagon. I was without my husband; my children without their father. It wasn't a deployment; he was never coming back. After being a military wife for nearly two decades, the life I knew no longer existed. Soon after the condolence casseroles stopped arriving, our military friends and family stopped arriving too. They were moving on to new duty stations and new friends. Though this deepened the loss, I learned I didn't need to go through it alone.

 Regina Vitt

TAPS Blog | When a family you know loses a spouse and a father, you want to do anything you can to make life easier for them. Sometimes, it can be difficult to find ways to help. Are you going to say or do something wrong? Are you going to be more of a burden than a help? Do they really want your help at the time? Other times, being able to help just comes naturally. I didn't give it a second thought when Rachael asked family and friends who were running in Anchorage's Big Wild Life runs to consider running for the TAPS team. My answer was an absolute "YES!".

The Day Before Our Last Day

 Andre Booker

TAPS Blog | The day before the last day of our lives was a great day and each year on that day, it will also continue to be a great day. There is no reason as to why I shouldn’t celebrate the last day of lives as if it were the greatest day of our lives…and the tomorrows that follow it shall be celebrated because he didn’t die, nope not dead at all; he simply passed away.

 Carrying On

TAPS Blog | One of my favorite quotes was shared with me through TAPS, and it seems to sum up everything I’m feeling. It says, “It’s not moving on. It’s carrying on.” With this in mind, I’ve done my best to carry on and live my life in a way that would make Ko proud. It’s devastating, frustrating and agonizing when I stop to think about how we were planning a life and a future for the two of us. We were preparing to settle into life at Ft. Bragg. We were building a life together. Instead, I find myself forced to make major life decisions on my own, which often leaves me angry and confused.
