Annual Coal Distribution Report

The Annual Coal Distribution Report (ACDR) provides detailed information on domestic coal distribution by origin state, destination state, consumer category, and method of transportation. Also provided is a summary of foreign coal distribution by coal-producing state. All data for 2010 are final and this report supersedes the 2010 quarterly distribution reports.

Highlights for 2010:

  • Total coal distributions for 2010 were 1,080.6 million short tons (mmst), an increase of 3.0 percent compared to 2009.
  • Distributions to domestic destinations were 998.9 mmst, an increase of 8.6 mmst (i.e. 0.9 percent increase) compared to 2009 and distributions to foreign destinations were 81.7 mmst, an increase of 22.6 mmst (i.e. 38.3 percent increase) over 2009.
  • Wyoming was the leading origin State of coal, accounting for about 435.4 mmst of domestic shipments, while Texas was the leading destination for coal, accounting for about 103.3 mmst of receipts.
  • Railroads moved about 70.6 percent of the domestic coal, while Truck accounted for about 11.8 percent, River about 11.3 percent and Tramway, Conveyor, and Slurry Pipeline accounted for about 6.1 percent. Great Lakes and Tidewater Pier transport modes accounted for less than 0.3 percent of the total shipments.
  • Electric Power sector received approximately 92.9 percent of the domestic distribution while Industrial plants excluding Coke received 4.8 percent, Coke plants about 2.0 percent and Commercial & Institutional plants about 0.3 percent
