NEH at the White House

Bridging Cultures through Law Film Series: The Loving Story

April 5, 2012

A screening of the NEH-funded documentary about Richard and Mildred Loving, whose successful challenge of a Virginia law barring interracial marriage changed history, provides the centerpiece for a  panel discussion of civil rights law. The panel discussion featured filmmaker Nancy Buirski, NAACP President and CEO Ben Jealous, Washington College of Law Professor Lia Epperson, and Phil Hirschkop, one of the lawyers who argued the case before the Supreme Court. NPR legal affairs correspondent Nina Totenberg moderated the discussion between the panelists and the student audience. Following the screening, the students attended a reception, which featured remarks from Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division Tom Perez.
