Group work emphasizes practical applications of superconducting technology

  • Superconducting Partnership with Industry (SPI/SPE) Projects:
    • HTS cables with Southwire Company (Ultera) and American Electric Power
    • HTS Fault Current Limiter with SuperPower-led team (NY)
    • HTS Transformer with Waukesha Electric Systems (Wisconsin)
    • HTS Motor R&D with Baldor-Reliance Electric (R&D unit in Cleveland)
  • Strategic R&D
    • Prototyping applications of 2nd generation HTS tapes, cables and coils (DOE/DARPA)
    • Cryogenic dielectrics R&D, including nano-dielectric materials (LDRD)
    • Cryogenic system development for applications in electric utilities, industry, energy and space

Applied Superconductivity Group

  • ORNL is the lead DOE laboratory for HTS R&D:
    • R&D partner in four major industry-led SPI projects
    • Strategic R&D in conductor engineering, cryogenic dielectrics
  • Consistent high ratings at DOE annual peer reviews
  • Proactive in technology transfer:
    • CRADAs, FLC Tech Transfer Awards, joint patents, industry on site
  • Technical excellence:
    • Two invited papers at 2006 Applied Superconductivity Conference
    • ORNL internal project on nano-composite dielectric materials
    • Readiness reviews of SPI projects before tie-in to grid
