Ensuring Global Security and Promoting Our Interests Abroad

As a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Chris is working to promote America’s interests abroad and defend against global security threats. This includes advocating for peace and stability in regions plagued by conflict, supporting our troops in the field, and stemming the spread of terrorism and proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. As Chairman of the Foreign Relations Subcommittee on African Affairs, he is focused on building partnerships throughout the continent and ensure that health programs, food aid, economic development and security assistance reach those in need throughout the globe.

Chris' foreign relations priorities include:

  • Promoting the economic interests of Delaware. Chris aims to increase Delaware’s global economic ties, ensuring fairness and a level playing field for American exports, as well as expanding the range of oversea market access to Delaware.
  • Defending U.S. security interests. Chris believes we must use all tools at our disposal to defend Americans against global threats and protect U.S. security interests.  Chris supports U.S. leadership to combat terrorism and promote global security, stability, and peace.
  • Supporting our troops in the field. Chris traveled to Afghanistan during his first few months in office to thank our troops for their honorable service and assess conditions on the ground.  It is Chris’ priority to ensure that our strategy in Afghanistan is worthy of the immeasurable commitment and sacrifice of our troops.
  • Building partnerships in Africa. As Chairman of the African Affairs Subcommittee, Chris supports U.S. and international engagement in Africa to build partnerships aimed at promoting good governance, economic development, food and health assistance, and security.
  • Supporting nuclear security, non-proliferation, and strategic arms reduction. Chris believes that one of the most significant security threats facing the United States the spread of nuclear weapons, technology, and material.  This is why he supported the ratification of the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) with Russia during his first weeks in the Senate, and continues to support nuclear non-proliferation and global strategic arms reduction efforts.
  • Protecting U.S. intellectual property. Just as we need to take steps to expedite patent approvals, we must also ensure that those patents are recognized and respected internationally. As a member of the Senate Judiciary and Foreign Relations committees, Chris supports greater international protections for American intellectual property.
