BOSTON - A Springfield man was convicted today in federal court of receipt of firearms and ammunition while under felony indictment.
Jorge Maldonado, 20, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Patti B. Saris to one count of receiving firearms and ammunition by a person under felony indictment.
Had the case proceeded to trial the Government’s evidence would have proven that on May 26, 2011, at a shooting range in Springfield, Maldonado, received and then fired a Smith & Wesson M&P9C, 9mm pistol and 9mm caliber ammunition, all of which had traveled in interstate commerce. At the time, Maldonado was under felony indictment in Hampden Superior Court for the following offenses: trafficking in a controlled substance (cocaine); possession of a class D controlled substance (marijuana) with intent to distribute; unlawful possession of a firearm; unlawful possession of ammunition without identification card; possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony; and receiving stolen property.
Judge Saris scheduled sentencing for June 21, 2012. Maldonado faces up to five years in prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release and a $250,000 fine.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Steven H. Breslow of Ortiz’s Springfield Branch Office.
