Summer Law Student Internship Program

Law students entering their second or third year of law school are encouraged to apply for the Western District of Missouri’s Summer Internship Program.  This unique program combines the traditional research and writing experience with weekly in-house case presentations from Assistant United States Attorneys who have managed and tried high-profile criminal cases, as well as multiple job-related field trips to agencies such as the Regional Crime Lab and Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary.   A new local rule also allows for the possibility of interns appearing and assisting in court proceedings under the supervision of an attorney.

The ten-week program begins after Memorial Day and runs through the first week of August.  A potential intern must be currently enrolled in an accredited law school and a U.S. citizen, and will be required to submit to and successfully pass a criminal and financial background check. Although not required, it is helpful to have taken classes in Evidence and Criminal Procedure prior to application. 

The position is unpaid; potential interns are encourage to contact their schools about any stipend program that may be available to compensate students who accept government service positions.

We will be accepting applications only via e-mail up to Jan. 1, 2012. We anticipate conducting interviews during December and January and making a selection of the eight-member class by February 1, if not before.  Individuals are encouraged to interview in person over the holiday season.

In addition to providing their resume, current school transcript and class rank, we would like applicants to briefly answer the following questions in their cover e-mail:

• What connection, if any, do you have to Kansas City or the Kansas City area?
• Does your school offer a summer stipend program, and will you be applying for such a program?
• How did you learn about our program?
• Confirm that you are aware the position is unpaid, and briefly explain your interest in the United States Attorney’s office.

Please do not submit writing samples as this time.
