The Commercial Outlook for U.S. Small Modular Nuclear Reactors
Meeting the energy, environment, and climate demands of the 21st century will require creating new solutions and reimagining older but still crucial technologies. Civil nuclear technology combines elements of both approaches. And while large reactors that produce in excess of 1,000 megawatts of electricity are the most common, they are not the only possible designs for power stations. Small modular reactors (SMRs), many of which are built on proven, well-known technology, could meet the power and heating needs of countries worldwide while significantly reducing carbon emissions. This report takes a detailed look at the U.S. SMR industry. It assesses U.S. competitiveness and international markets for SMRs, identifies domestic obstacles to U.S. competitiveness in the industry, and discusses the potential impact of SMRs on U.S. job creation. It concludes with a series of policy and industry recommendations and, in an appendix, identifies 27 “best prospect” international markets for SMRs.
